Millions suffered and died, millions grieved, and even more faced job loss and brutal economic problems. Most of us just hunkered down, our lives contracting in fear and made colorless, to whatever degree, by isolation and inactivity. In my boredom and frustration, I still felt burning gratitude that I and those I loved were safe—and like many of us I intensified my relationship with the natural world.
