An Ignatian immersion in Mexico leads to coffee campus venture

Capeltic Coffee, focused on sustainability and fair pay for indigenous growers, sets up its first U.S. shop at Santa Clara University.

A connection forged between Broncos on an immersion trip to Chiapas, Mexico, and local indigenous coffee growers has brewed something new.

Capeltic Coffee now has a local outpost in Lucas Hall, home of the Leavey School of Business. Profits from each cup of their ethically-sourced blend go directly to the farmers, supporting indigenous sovereignty.

“This is probably the first cup of fully ethical, traceable coffee you’ll ever drink,” says Jazmine Low, program director of immersions at the Ignatian Center. “It’s feel-good and social-good, and aligns with our Jesuit values.”

SCU is Capeltic’s first foray into the U.S. market.
